14-Day European Vacation For Less Than $1,500: Trip Cost Report

It’s time for a trip cost report! Every trip, I like to share what it costs me to travel. Not only do I want to stay completely transparent, but I also hope these expenses prove to you how affordable travel can be. 

Prices are listed in Euros or Swiss Francs and converted to USD using credit card statements from my no foreign transaction fee credit cards. Always charge transactions in the local currency to get the best exchange rate!

This trip details a 14-day trip for two people.

 

Day 1

Olympiapark (Olympic Park)
Munich, Germany

Transportation

  • Flight: Orlando, Florida to Munich, Germany on Icelandair (Free)
      • Chase Unlimited Rewards made this flight FREE! We used 60,000 points to book two round-trip tickets through the Chase Portal. Using my Chase Sapphire Reserve, my points were worth 1.5¢ per point. The cash price of this round-trip flight was 450 USD per person.

Food

  • Food was not included in our flights. We had a quick layover in Keflavik where we purchased breakfast. (2,286 Icelandic Krona/17.78 USD)

Day 2

      • Munich Airport is located in Zone M-5.

      • Dinner for 4 people. We stayed with friends in Munich and purchased dinner as a thank-you.

  • We stayed with friends who live in Munich (No cost)

Day 3

  • Munich City Transportation: 24-hour Small Group Ticket (15 Euro/17.54 USD)
      • Only Zone M was needed for today, making the ticket cheaper than Day 2.

    • We were unable to drive our car rental into Germany and the rental agency was not open on Sundays. We picked up our car rental on a Saturday and parked it in a nearby parking garage for 1 day.

    • We did not make it over to Hohenwerfen Castle until the late afternoon when the castle was closing. There is a nice hike from the parking lot to the castle entrance that we decided to see even though we could not purchase tickets to enter the castle.

                      The round-trip flights from Orlando to Europe at the time of points redemption were being sold on Icelandair’s website for 450 USD. Utilizing Chase points, we paid 0 USD. Along with the flights, we redeemed our available points balance following this trip, which gave us a statement credit of 505.45 USD. This directly reduced the total trip cost.

                      Chase points were earned through everyday spending and allowed us to enjoy a longer vacation for less out-of-pocket.
